We live in a paradox.
Humans have never had more access to resources than we do today - in the United States, the majority of people walk around with supercomputers in their hands. Carving your own path has never been more accessible. But at the same time, we feel an overwhelming pressure to fit in and be accepted, to live a life like everyone else's within the societal norms.
Think about it.
Entrepreneurs are starting companies at historic rates. Remote work has afforded us unprecedented flexibility. And with increasing AI capabilities, information has never been more available. But at the same time, we have never been more psychologically captured, enthralled by social media algorithms we are chemically dependent on. We are obsessed with comparison, constantly weighing ourselves and our status against peers. Keeping up with the Joneses, a saying that dates back to 1913, rings alarmingly true.
It takes courage to stand out.
Our survival instincts drive us to fit in. After all, it's easier to do what everyone else is doing. Ironically, in an age of digitalization and technology, ancient tribal psychology still dominates our society. Don't stray from the tribe - you may become an outcast, left behind to fend for yourself. This fear holds us back and thwarts creativity.
We're getting sick of that way of living.
Critical thinking and courage are the backbone of American society. It's not easy to stand out and do your own thing. Nor is it wrong to be scared of the unknown. Not taking the chance is what is unacceptable.
